DU inaugurates celebration with 100-pound cake
Dhaka University (DU) authorities yesterday started celebration of Mujib Borsho, marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The programmes include placing wreathes at Bangabandhu's portrait, holding discussions, cutting a hundred-pound cake, releasing balloons and offering prayers.
Teachers, students and officials of the university, led by Vice-Chancellor Dr Akhtaruzzaman, placed a wreath at the portrait of the great leader at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi.
Paying rich tribute to Bangabandhu, Dr Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the series of programmes through releasing a hundred balloons on the premises of the university's Memory Eternal monument.
Later, a discussion was held on the Memory Eternal premises, attended by administrative high-ups of the university, representatives of Ducsu, teachers and students.
Dr Akhtaruzzaman said the university will confer an honorary doctorate of law on the Father of the Nation posthumously through a special convocation on September 5.
Nobel laureate economist Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee will deliver the keynote speech at the convocation, he added.
Bangabandhu was a student of the university's law department, said Akhtaruzzaman.
He also announced programmes taken by DU marking 'Mujib Borsho', which included building a sculpture of Bangabandhu, founding the 'Bangabandhu Research Institute for Peace and Liberty', organising an international conference and publishing a book titled 'Bangabandhu and DhakaUniversity'.
Besides, sweets were distributed among students at dormitories of the university, while special prayers were offered at university's central mosque after Zohr prayers, seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of Bangabandbu.
