DRU elects new leaders
Rafiqul Islam Azad of English daily The Independent and Riaz Chowdhury of online news portal asianmail24.com were elected president and general secretary of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity respectively for next one year.
At yesterday’s election, The Daily Star’s Helemul Alam in an overwhelming victory bagged the highest number of votes -- 851 -- to win the joint general secretary position. His rival Mehedi Azad Masum of Dainik Jagaran got 430 votes.
Azad bagged 550 votes to take the position of the union’s top leader, with his nearest rival Shahnewaz Dulal of bbarta24.net getting 489 votes.
There were five contestants for the top position of DRU.
Riaz Chowdhury got 567 votes to win over Nurul Islam Hasib by only two votes.
Nazrul Kabir was elected vice-president with 488 votes, while his nearest rival Rashedul Haq bagged 441 votes. Habibur Rahman of Shomoyer Alo was elected organising secretary with 648 votes, and his nearest rival was Mainul Hossain with 626 votes.
Other elected office bearers are financial secretary Zaiul Haque Sabuz (unopposed), office secretary Zafar Iqbal (645 votes), women affairs secretary Rita Nahar (unopposed), publicity and publications secretary Maidur Rahman Rubel (643), ICT and training secretary Shakhawat Hosssain Sumon (696), sports secretary Mujibur Rahman (703), cultural secretary Mizan Chowdhury (665), reception secretary HM Akter (unopposed) and welfare secretary Khalid Saifullah (unopposed).
Mainul Ahsan, SM Mizan, Ahmed Mushfika Naznin, Kamruzzaman Bablu, Imarn Hossain Maujmder, M Murad Hossain and Sayeed Abdul Malik, were elected members of the new committee.
Amid huge enthusiasm and festivity, 1,329 voters out of 1,635 cast votes to elect DRU’s executive committee for 2020.
The election was held at the Sagar-Runi auditorium of DRU from 9am to 5pm without any break.
