DNCC ward councillor Rajib remanded
A Dhaka court tonight placed Tarequzzaman Rajib, a councillor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), on a 14-day remand in two separate cases.
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) last night arrested Rajib from the capital’s Bashundhara Residential Area on charges of his involvement in extortion and land grabbing.
Rajib is the councillor of ward-33, which covers part of Mohammadpur area. He is also a joint general secretary of Jubo League’s Dhaka north unit.
Tonight, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Yeasmin Ara passed the remand order after police produced him before the court seeking 20-day remand --10-day for the case filed under Firearms Act and another 10-day for the case under Narcotics Control Act.
Earlier in the day, Rab filed the two separate cases with Bhatara Police Station against Rajib and handed over him to the police station around 7:00pm, Muktaruzzaman, officer-in-charge of the police station told The Daily Star.
Rab officials yesterday said they held Tarequzzaman Rajib from one of his friends’ home in a raid carried out as part their ongoing drive against graft.
Rab officials also claimed to have seized seven bottles of foreign liquor, an illegal pistol, three bullets and Tk 33,000 in cash during the drive yesterday.
