DNCC councillor Rajib denied bail
A Dhaka court yesterday rejected bail petitions of Tarequzzaman Rajib, a councillor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), and sent him to jail in connection with separate cases.
Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sayeed passed the order after Detective Branch of Police (DB) produced him before the court on completion of his 14-day remand in two cases filed under Arms and Narcotics Control Acts.
The investigation officer, in his forwarding reports, said Rajib gave important information about the incidents which were being verified, adding that he needs to be confined in jail until the investigation is completed.
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on October 19 arrested Rajib from the capital’s Bashundhara Residential Area on charges of involvement in extortion and land-grabbing.
Rab officials also claimed to have seized seven bottles of foreign liquor, an unlicensed pistol, three bullets and Tk 33,000 in cash during the drive.
Two cases were filed after Rajib was handed over to Vatara Police Station, hours after he was detained.
Rajib, the councillor of ward-33 -- which covers part of Mohammadpur area, was also a joint general secretary of Jubo League’s Dhaka north unit. He was expelled from the party post after his arrest.
