Development activist Shahjahan Kabir no more

Former senior advisor of The Asia Foundation in Bangladesh, Shahjahan Kabir, passed away in Dhaka on January 8, according a press release. He was 70.

He was being treated for kidney-related ailment, the release added.

He left behind his wife Farah Kabir, country director of ActionAid Bangladesh, two sons and many well-wishers.

Several NGOs and organisations, including ActionAid Bangladesh, The Asia Foundation, INGO Forum, Naripokkho and Dhaka Theatre mourned his death. He was buried in Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard on January 8 after Zohr prayers.

Completing his masters from Dhaka University in 1969, Shahjahan Kabir joined International Red Cross the same year. He was also a founding member of Dhaka Theatre.

He joined The Asia Foundation in 1972 and involved himself with its scholarship project for girls in the 1980s to inspire their education.

Shahjahan Kabir made significant contributions to women's empowerment and gender equality through

his work.

After working for 40 years, he retired from The Asia Foundation in 2012.

A doa mahfil and qulkhwani will be held today at Mohakhali DOHS Mosque at 4pm.

His well-wishers are requested to attend the programme to pray for the departed soul.
