Dengue claims one more life in Khulna
A dengue patient died at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Sabita Rani (40), wife of Haradhan, of Altapol village under Keshobpur upazila of Jashore district.
Sailendranath Biswas, residential physician of Khulna Medical College Hospital, told The Daily Star that Sabita died of dengue shock syndrome. She had been suffering from dengue fever for some days. She was admitted at the dengue ward of the hospital on November 3.
Her heart disease was diagnosed during treatment at KMCH, he said, adding that she breathed her last yesterday morning, he said.
Atiar Rahman Sheikh, assistant civil surgeon of Khulna, told The Daily Star that 25 people have died of dengue fever in Khulna this year.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), a total of 112 patients died of dengue this year after verifying 179 suspected cases.
However, the unofficial death toll would be higher than that.
According to the DGHS, a total of 189 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals across the country in 24 hours till 8am yesterday, of whom 114 were outside Dhaka.
A total of 97,009 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country this year, of whom 49,875 were in Dhaka, according to the DGHS.
A total of 814 dengue patients are now undergoing treatment at different hospitals across the country of whom 477 are outside Dhaka.
The number of dengue patients never exceeded 11,000 in the last 18 years, since its outbreak in 2000.
It was 10,148 last year while it crossed the 6,000 mark twice in the last 18 years: 6,232 in 2002 and 6,060 in 2016, according to a DGHS report.
