Dengue cases reported in Khulna, Ctg
Although dengue virus has been a worry mostly for residents of Dhaka in recent years, the disease appears to be affecting a few people in other districts of the country as well.
According to figures by Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS), 7,179 people have so far been infected with the virus between January 1 and yesterday, 81 of whom were outside Dhaka.
However, officials say the number could be more, as many cases are not documented in the data of DGHS.
KHULNA
In Khulna division, 44 patients were infected with dengue over the last two weeks. Of them, 25 are from Khulna district, and 19 others from five of the ten districts of the division.
According to Khulna Health Department of Disease Control, 16 of the affected were treated at Khulna Medical College Hospital, four at Khulna City Medical College Hospital, four at Gazi Medical College Hospital, 11 at Kushtia General Hospital, five at Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, two at Jashore General Hospital and one in Narail Sadar Hospital.
ATM Monzur Morshed, director of Khulna Medical College Hospital, told The Daily Star that most of the patients who were admitted to KMCH came from outside Khulna.
“Six patients are now undergoing treatment in KMCH,” he said yesterday.
Dr Ferdousi Akhter, assistant director (Disease Control) of Khulna Health Department, told The Daily Star that a cell has been opened to record information on dengue at the divisional level.
“I am leading a three-member dengue prevention team,” she said, adding that the number of patients could be more, as DGHS does not have updated data from all hospitals and clinics.
“Dengue-infected people should be in complete rest and drink ample water, juice and other fluids. Patients should be rushed to hospital without delay,” said Ferdousi Akhter.
ASM Abdur Razzak, civil Surgeon of Khulna told The Daily Star that 116 medical teams are working in nine upazilas of Khulna to prevent its spread.
Partha Protim Debnath, assistant registrar of KMCH told The Daily Star yesterdaythat they arranged for kits to diagnose dengue fever just two days ago.
Md Anisur Rahman, conservancy officer of Khulna City Corporation, told The Daily Star that 37 fogging machines are spraying larvicide in 31 wards of KCC, to prevent breeding of mosquitoes.
CHATTOGRAM
In Chattogram, a total of 21 dengue-infected persons have been detected till yesterday.
Chattogram civil surgeon Azizur Rahman Siddiqui confirmed the number, saying that dengue had not become an epidemic in Chattogram yet, and the administration had taken measures to check the disease.
Out of the 21, four people have already been treated at Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Five are currently admitted to CMCH and the other 12 are admitted to several other hospitals and clinics, said the civil surgeon.
A Dhaka University student was the latest dengue patient at CMCH, admitted yesterday, informed Akhtarul Islam, deputy director of the hospital.
The DD said the student came home on vacation and was detected with the virus. “He might have contracted the virus from Dhaka,” the DD suspected.
All the 21 patients were at primary stage of dengue and out of danger, said civil surgeon Azizur, adding that the patients had come from different areas in Chattogram and nearby areas.
