Declare national disaster: SSA to govt
Speakers at a human chain yesterday urged the government to declare “national disaster” because of the recent spike in mosquito-borne dengue disease all over the country.
Besides state initiative, effective and collective efforts over eradicating mosquitoes have to be taken by guardians, students as well as people from all walks of life so that the situation does not turn worse, they said.
Sammilita Samajik Andolon (SSA), a citizens’ platform, arranged the human chain in front of the National Museum in the capital, where participants also called upon the countrymen to unite and remain alert against spread of rumours.
Criticising government’s inadequacy in preventing spread of the disease, veteran politician Pankaj Bhattacharya said concerned government high-ups, including minister and city corporation mayors, should apologise to the nation for their failure.
When the decease spread all over the country, the health minister was away on an overseas trip. Not only this, he also compared the breeding capacity of Aedes mosquitoes to that of the Rohingya refugees, which was “extremely insensitive”, said Pankaj.
SSA Joint Secretary Sirajul Islam chaired the event.
