DC Harun appointed Narayanganj SP
Hours after clearance from the Election Commission, the home ministry yesterday appointed Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Harun-Ur-Rashid as the superintendent of police (SP) of Narayanganj district.
The EC in a letter issued “no objection” to a proposal of the public security division under the ministry, for posting Harun, also the former SP to Gazipur, to Narayanganj.
On Wednesday, EC asked the public security division to withdraw Narayanganj SP Anisur Rahman, following a demand from the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
The ministry attached Anisur to the Police Headquarters as assistant inspector general (AIG). Barishal Range Additional DIG Azad Mia was transferred to Gazipur Metropolitan Police.
On November 25, the 20-party alliance placed a written demand for removal of the Narayanganj SP, saying they are doubtful whether he would discharge the election duty neutrally, as his wife Fatema Tuzzahura is a member of parliament from the reserved seat.
As the position has been replaced by Harun, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul at a press conference on Friday termed the situation “out of the frying pan into the fire”.
SP Harun made the headlines a few years back for beating up BNP's former chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque during a demonstration in front of the parliament building.
BNP had also lodged a complaint against Harun when he had been working in Gazipur during union council elections in 2016. The government then withdrew him for a period of time.
