‘Culprits of casino, drug trade won’t be spared’
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has issued a strong warning against casino masterminds, narcotics traffickers and other criminals yesterday, saying that wrongdoers will be brought to the book.
“People involved in casino and narcotics trade want to survive by contesting in elections...No one will be spared,” the minister said, in reply to journalists’ query regarding casino and narcotics traffickers who are participating in the upcoming city corporation elections.
The minister was addressing reporters after inaugurating the television commercial (TVC) of Narcotics Information Management System (NIMS) at the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) headquarters in the capital’s Segunbagicha.
AKM Mominul Haque Sayeed is contesting for councillor of ward-9 of DSCC. Asked why law enforcers are not taking actions against him even after allegations of casino business and narcotics trafficking, the minister said those who are earning money illegally are criminals. Whoever the perpetrator is -- whether a politician or public representative -- will not be exempt from punishment, he said, adding that there is a zero-tolerance policy against crimes and the government is determined to establish rule of law.
Asked about the ongoing narcotics drive, Kamal said, “The drive is on and some drug barons have been arrested in the last two years… law enforcement agencies are still conducting the drive to arrest others on their list,” he said.
Earlier the minister inaugurated NIMS and its TVC, jointly organised by DNC and Koica (Korea International Cooperation Agency). Through the system, DNC officials will now able to follow cases, licence management, operations and hospital management online.
DNC Director General Jamal Uddin Ahmed, Home Ministry Security Service Division Additional Secretary (Narcotics Control Wing) Dr Tarun Kanti Sikder and Koica Country Director Joe Hyun-gue were also present among others.
