CU VC becomes 'Bangabandhu Chair' amid criticism
Chittagong University Vice Chancellor Prof Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury has taken over the position of "Bangabandhu Chair", without official approval from the syndicate, the highest decision-making body of the university.
The VC took the charge yesterday. Pro-VC Prof Shirin Akter was not present at the event, who said proper procedure was not followed for the appointment.
According to article 4(B) of principles of the Bangabandhu Chair, a committee of teachers will be formed to recommend a professor for the post before the syndicate, which will appoint the professor on contractual basis as the chairperson.
The committee had recommended Prof Iftekhar, but the pro-VC told journalists that the syndicate has not approved the decision yet.
The person who will take charge should have twenty years of experience in research on Bangabandhu and have ten articles published in international-standard journals or books, as per the principle.
Prof Kharul Alam Quddusi, CU senate member, said the VC does not have the required years of experience, nor has he been published in significant journals.
Contacted, the VC said he did not need the syndicate's approval as it is not an administrative post, rather it is just an “honorary post”.
“The committee chose me as I have been doing research for the last 30 years and have several articles on Bangabandhu.”
