Ctg human chain demands release of Shahidul, Maidul
A citizens' platform in Chattogram city yesterday demanded immediate release of acclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam and Chittagong University teacher Maidul Islam, who were sent to jail in separate cases filed against them under the controversial Section 57 of the ICT Act.
The demand was raised from a human chain organised under the banner of 'Concerned Citizens of Chattogram' in front of Chattogram Press Club.
They also demanded unconditional release of protesters who were detained during the recent student protests for road safety.
Protesters also urged the government to withdraw section 57 of ICT Act.
Speakers claimed artists and university teachers are being sent to jail who are protesting injustice, while corrupted persons and oppressors are not being brought to book.
A good number of progressive teachers, professionals and leaders of several left leaning organisations also expressed solidarity with the protesters.
Assistant professors of Communications and Journalism department if Chittagong University Saima Alam and Subarna Majumder, lawyers Akther Kabir Chowdhury and Bhulan Lal Bhowmick and columnist Shakhawat Hossain were present, among others, at the human chain.
Founder of photography agency Drik and internationally-renowned photographer Shahidul Alam was remanded on August 6 for seven days in a case filed under the ICT Act's Section 57.
A Chattogram court on September 24 sent Maidul to jail in a case filed against him in a case filed under the same law.
