Ctg court acquits Samar Krishna from arms case
A court in Chattogram yesterday acquitted apprentice lawyer Samar Krishna Chowdhury from an arms case filed with Boalkhali Police Station.
The court of District and Sessions Judge Md Ismail acquitted Samar from the case after Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted its final investigation report, said Advocate Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury, also president of Chattogram District Bar Association.
Earlier in July, Samar was acquitted from two narcotics cases filed against him with Boalkhali Police Station. He was out of Chattogram Central Jail on July 15 last year after securing bail in both the arms and narcotics cases.
After being acquitted, Samar told journalists at the court building, “I was framed in false cases by police and PBI could not find truth in the allegation against me, through its fair investigation.”
Thanking lawyers, court and the media, Samar said “I had been languishing in jail without doing anything wrong. I want justice and I will move to court against those responsible for my untold sufferings.”
Hailing from Dakkhin Saroatali union of Boalkhali upazila, Samar was arrested by Boalkhali police on May 27 last year, during the countrywide anti-narcotics drive, in connection with two cases -- one for possessing yaba pills and another for firearms.
Family members alleged that Samar was picked up from Chattogram Court area on the way home. They claimed police arrested and framed him in false cases “influenced” by one British citizen Sanjoy Das. The family members also pointed out the then Chattogram Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Monir-Uz-Zaman was “providing favours” to Sanjoy.
Samar and his family claimed their distant relative Swapan Das and Sanjoy were at loggerheads over a land.
After Samar’s arrest, the family members sought Prime Minister’s intervention, held a press conference and formed a human chain. Shortly after the allegation, the DIG was transferred to Police Headquarters from Chattogram.
The then Boalkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Himangshu Das Rana was also withdrawn from the police station.
