Ctg confectionery fined Tk 10 lakh for polluting canal

Department of Environment (DoE) in Chattogram yesterday fined a confectionery Tk 10 lakh, for discarding untreated effluents into a canal at Patiya upazila of Chattogram.

The fine was imposed on Fulkoli Sweets, after a hearing at DoE office in Khulshi.

Muktadir Hasan, assistant director of Chattogram DoE, told The Daily Star that the company was discharging untreated effluents into the nearby Sergeant Mohiuddin canal instead of using the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP).

More than 500 students of the adjacent Union Krishi High School were enduring this polluted environment, he said.

“DoE fined them Tk 10 lakh for harming the environment and ordered them to run the ETP,”he said.

MA Sabur, general manager of Fulkoli Sweets told The Daily Star that DoE fined them for not upgrading the ETP. However, he denied releasing effluents into the canal.
