Cox's Bazar DC Hill cleared of encroachers
The deputy commissioner (DC) and superintendent of police (SP) of Cox's Bazar informed the High Court yesterday that they have complied with its directive and evicted land grabbers from DC Hill of the district town.
They also said they demolished illegal structures built by the encroachers.
Issuing a contempt of court rule against DC Kamal Hossain and SP Masud Hossain, the HC had summoned the two to appear before it yesterday.
Yesterday, they both appeared before the bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman and offered unconditional apology to the HC for their delay in complying with its order for the eviction of the land grabbers and demolition of illegal structures from the DC Hill.
The court accepted their apology and compliance report and exempted them from the contempt of court rule.
On July 3, during hearing a bail petition filed by Ibrahim Khalil Mamun -- a Cox's Bazar reporter of Bangla daily Bonik Barta -- the HC bench ordered the DC and SP to evict land grabbers and demolish their illegal structures from the DC Hill and submit a compliance report before it in a month.
Ibrahim Khalil's bail petition was filed after he was accused in a case filed under the “Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Ain” (women and children repression prevention act).
Ibrahim Khalil's lawyer Advocate Minhazul Haque Chowdhury then told the HC that the case was filed against him on false and fabricated charges as his reports were published on land grabbing and building of illegal structures on the DC Hill.
After the DC and SP failed to implement the HC directive in a month, the court issued a contempt of court rule against them and summoned them to appear before it.
Ibrahim Khalil told The Daily Star yesterday that police have already submitted a final report to the trial court, exempting him from the case.
