Seven people were killed and 27 injured in road accidents in three districts yesterday, according to reports from our correspondents.
In Cumilla, three people, including a policeman, were killed and two injured when a wrecker hit a police car on Dhaka-Chattogram highway at Syedpur in Chauddagram.
Police said a covered van hit by another vehicle knocked the wrecker, which eventually crashed into the police vehicle.
The deceased were identified as Akter Hossain, 33, assistant sub-inspector of Miabazar Highway Police Outpost; Fahad, 25, driver of the covered van; and Sumon, 24, his helper, said Abul Kalam Azad, in-charge of the police outpost.
The police officer said the ASI was in the police car during a rescue operation while the covered van driver and his helper were standing on the road, he added.
The identities of the injured could not be known immediately.
In Cox’s Bazar, two Rohingya siblings were killed and five were injured when a Balukhali-bound CNG-run auto-rickshaw carrying them collided head-on with a Teknaf-bound pickup of Border Guard Bangladesh at Hoaikkong Balukhali in Teknaf upazila, said witnesses.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Noor, 25, and Ayub, 17. They are sons of Amir Hamza, a resident of block-11 of Shalbagan Rohingya camp in the upazila, said law enforcers.
The injured were taken to a local hospital from where they were transferred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.
Police rushed to the spot and seized the damaged auto-rickshaw. Further legal steps would be taken after investigation, said Sharif Hasan, sub-inspector of Nayapara Highway Police of Teknaf.
In Savar, a woman died when a truck hit a microbus carrying her on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Hemayetpur, said Muhammad Faruk Hossen, sub-inspector of Savar Model Police Station.
The deceased -- Nishat Parvin, 19, daughter of Neshar Ahmed -- got married three days ago, said the SI, adding that she along with her family was returning home in Savar’s Tetuljhora area from her in-law’s house in the capital’s Mirpur.
In another incident in the same area, a man named Razzak Hossain died as a bus ran him over while he was crossing the highway, said police.
In Dhamrai, at least 20 people were injured when a Dhaka-bound bus collided head-on with another bus on the same highway in Dhulivita area, said police.
