Coastal area could be developed into economic hub
The coastal area of Bangladesh, enriched with natural resources, may be developed into an economic hub if the government takes proper action plan, experts said at a seminar yesterday.
Civil Engineering Department of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) organised the seminar on “Sustainable coastal development” at its office in Dhaka.
Experts speaking at the event urged authorities to address waterlogging and salinisation for accelerating agricultural production, and provide support to fishermen.
At the programme, Engr Malik Fida Abdullah Khan, deputy executive director of Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services, said the coastal region of Bangladesh is somewhat neglected, but it has immense potential.
Speaking as chief guest at the seminar, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayon Chandra Chanda urged engineers to develop new techniques and mechanism in ensuring sustainable coastal development.
