Classes stalled for 2-day strike
A faction of teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) called a two-day strike yesterday, as their 10-day ultimatum demanding resignation of the VC ended on Tuesday.
Under the banner of “Jahangirnagar Against Corruption”, they staged a sit-in in front of the JU administrative building.
Several classes were suspended due to the strike, this correspondent found after visiting different departments of the university. Scheduled examinations were out of purview of the strike.
The students, who have been demanding removal of VC Prof Farzana Islam for her alleged involvement in corruption and moral degradation, barred university buses from leaving the transport depot on Tuesday night, resulting in low presence of teachers and students on campus.
JU acting Transport Officer Prof Ali Azom Talukder said, “Some students halted operations of Dhaka-bound buses last night, but we have managed to make the operations normal.”
Mohammad Didar, one of the organisers of the movement, said they will continue their demonstration until the VC stepped down.
Meanwhile, VC-backed teachers’ platform “Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad” held a human chain, saying allegations against the VC were false.
Speaking there, Prof ATM Atiqur Rahman said, “The number of protesters doesn’t matter. If even a single person can prove the allegations, we will change our stance.”
