Mayoral aspirants on final leg of individual campaigns
With five days remaining for electioneering, mayoral contestants of Awami League and BNP were in a frantic mood today to reach the maxmimum numbers of voters and woo them.
From morning to dusk, they remained busy in carrying out campaigning at different parts of Dhaka North and South City Corporation areas.
According to the electoral code of conduct, the deadline for the campaigns is set on midnight of January 30, as the DNCC and DSCC election is scheduled for February 1.
Ishraque: “Refrain from influencing the election”
BNP mayoral aspirant for Dhaka South City Corporation Ishraque Hossain today called upon his rival Awami League candidate Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh to refrain from establishing supremacy in the polls by means of capitalising on dynastic influence.
“I know Taposh is a gentleman. I’d like to call upon him not to influence the election. Apart from that, I hope the law enforcers and the officials engaged in conducting the polls will discharge their responsibilities in an impartial manner,” Ishraque said.
Ishraque, son of late Sadeque Hossain Khoka who was mayor of the yet-undivided Dhaka City Corporation, made the call at a press conference at his Gopibagh residence in the old part of Dhaka.
Claiming that the country is not the parental property of anyone, Ishraque said, “We will accept the polls result, whatever it is, unless any irregularities take place during the election.”
Tabith: “Do not violate electoral code in the face of obstacles”
BNP’s Dhaka North mayoral candidate Tabith Awal asked his supporters and workers not to violate the electoral code of conduct in the face of obstacles from the opponent quarter.
“We don’t want any occurrence in the electoral filed. Whatever obstacle appears, we will not break discipline as the people are our last resort of strength in the election,” he said.
Describing the next seven days as a very tough challenge for him, Tabith said his supporters and workers will be threatened in many ways to stay him from the election.
“Don’t be afraid of the threat. You (people) should go to the polling centres with mental courage. The people who are threatening you are afraid themselves,” said Tabith, the son of BNP leader Abdul Awal Mintoo.
Tabith, along with his party’s senior leaders and a good number of followers, were carrying out mass contact campaigns at different places in Mirpur area, garnering support in favour of Sheaf of Paddy, the electoral symbol of BNP.
Taposh: “Civic services within 90 days of being elected”
Awami League mayoral candidate for Dhaka South Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said that he would ensure civic services for the city within the first 90 days of him being elected.
In a brief rally on the Akmol Khan road near Babu Bazar bridge, Taposh, who resigned as lawmaker from Dhaka-10 to run for mayor, said if elected, the door of the DSCC office would remain open to Dhaka’s citizens at all times.
Taposh said he has divided his plan into five sections—heritage Dhaka, beautiful Dhaka, mobile Dhaka, good governance Dhaka, and developed Dhaka.
To achieve his goal, he has short, mid and long-term plans.
“I have a 30-year plan for the DSCC to make it beautiful and more livable,” said Taposh.
