CCC drive smears English signboards
A number of signboards written in English were smeared with black paint by a mobile court of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) during its drive in different parts of the city yesterday.
The signs belonged to various businesses including mobile phone outlets, bank ATM booths and departmental stores as well as a newspaper named the Holiday, according to eye witnesses.
Contacted, CCC executive magistrate Jahanara Ferdous said, “As per the High Court directive, all institutions must write their signboards in Bangla.”
In the case of institutions with proper names in English, for example The Daily Star, its signboard must be written in Bangla alongside English, she added.
The CCC mayor had issued a three months' deadline for all businesses, asking to convert their signboards into Bangla. The CCC has launched the drive since the deadline expired last month, Jahanara also said.
In 2014, the High Court directed the government to take necessary steps in one month for using the state language Bangla in all advertisements, signboards and vehicle registration plates.
