Over 100 BNP men sued in two days
Multiple cases were filed against over a hundred activists of BNP and its front organisations in Mymensingh on Wednesday and Thursday.
Besides, some party leaders and activists were arrested and sent to jail in the cases filed for their alleged involvement in vandalism, obstructing law enforcers and planning subversive activities, following verdicts in the August 21 grenade attack cases.
In Mymensingh town, police on Thursday night filed a case against 20 persons with Kotwali Police Station for vandalising vehicles and obstructing law enforcers in Swadeshi Bazar area, said Mahudul Islam, officer-in-charge of the police station.
The accused include district unit (south) secretary of BNP Abu Wahab Akanda, joint secretary Shah Shibbir Ahmed Bhulu and district Sramik Dal president Abu Sayeed.
In Nandail upazila, a case was filed the same night against 46 activists of BNP and its front organisations for “planning subversive activities”.
AKM Rafiqul Islam -- president of BNP's east zone unit in Saudi Arabia -- who was arrested in the afternoon, was named as the prime accused, said OC Kamrul Islam Miah of Nandail Police Station. A court sent him to jail, he added.
In Phulbaria upazila, law enforcers filed a case against around 64 activists of BNP and its front organisations on Wednesday.
Police said following the verdicts, they blocked a road in protest, vandalised vehicles and threw brickbats at them.
Sub-inspector Shah Sikander Ali filed the case with Phulbaria Police Station. Police claimed that seven cops including the SI were injured during the incident.
However, the case's prime accused, AKM Shamser Ali, secretary of Phulbaria municipality unit of BNP, said it was filed to harass them.
In Netrakona, four persons including a BNP leader were sent to jail yesterday after they were arrested in a case filed for “planning subversive activities”.
The arrestees are Johirul Haque, member of Netrakona district unit BNP; Abul Hossain Talukder, former president of Sadar upazila unit of Chhatra Shibir; Sujon Mia, joint convener of Rouha union's Jubo Dal unit; and Jewel Mia, president of the union's Chhatra Dal unit.
The case was filed with Netrakona Model Police Station on Wednesday, against 65 named and around 100 unnamed persons, said OC Borhan Uddin Khan.
FORMER CHAUGACHHA MAYOR HELD
On Thursday, former mayor of Chaugachha municipality and president of the town's BNP unit was arrested in a case filed over sabotage on October 4, reports our Benapole correspondent.
Police arrested Salim Reja, 50, from his house in the municipality, said OC Akikul Islam of Chaugachha Police Station.
He returned home on September 11 after securing bail from the High Court in another case, said family members. They alleged that he was arrested because of his political affiliation.
