Bus helper held over crushing BIWTC official’s leg

Police Bureau of Investigation on Friday night arrested the helper of the bus responsible for the incident in which a BIWTC official lost one of her legs in the capital’s Banglamotor area on August 27.

Tipped off, PBI arrested Bacchu Mia, 18, at Gouripur of Mymensingh around 8:30pm on Friday, Bashir Ahmed, special superintendent of PBI Dhaka Metro (North), told The Daily Star.

Krishna Roy Chowdhury, 55, assistant manager (accounts) at the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), lost her left leg after a recklessly-driven bus ran her over on a pavement.

The accident took place when she was on her way to a bank in the area from her nearby office.

She was rushed to the Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital from where she was taken to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (Nitor).

Krishna, who had joined the BIWTC in 1990, lived with her family in the city’s Maniknagar area.

On September 1, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested bus driver Morshed from Kazipara area in Dhaka.

Morshed had given confessional statement before a Dhaka court. He said he did not have the driving licence for heavy vehicles. He, however, could not produce any licence, according to officials. Morshed used to drive a car, the PBI official said, quoting the arrestee.
