BU registrar sacked over sexual harassment
Monirul Islam, suspended registrar of Barishal University was dismissed from service permanently after allegation of sexual harassment was proven by a probe committee.
The decision was approved at a syndicate meeting of BU held on Tuesday till late night at the university's liaison office in Dhaka, said Dr Imamul Huq, BU vice chancellor yesterday.
BU sources said Monirul sexually harassed a female candidate who was seeking employment in a fourth-grade post.
Following the incident, BU teachers' association filed a complaint, demanding Monirul's removal from service.
He was suspended in mid-2018 and a three-member probe committee was formed to investigate the matter.
Dr. Hasinur Rahman, dean of science and engineering faculty, was made acting registrar.
PROTESTS CONTINUE AT BU
Students continued their protest for the 16th day yesterday. They blocked Barishal-Kuakata highway at 11am, saying protests will continue until they receive written assurance about sending VC Imamul Huq on leave.
However, the VC said the situation went out of the authorities' control. He added that there is no cause to send him on leave by force, saying “If I need a leave, I will apply to the chancellor.”
