BRTA opens probe on Suprobhat, Jabal-e-Noor buses
Authorities have launched investigation against Suprobhat and Jabal-e-Noor bus services, both of which have drawn public reprisal for reckless driving.
Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) today formed a five-member probe committee to scrutinise the papers of these two bus services of Dhaka city.
Led by Sirajul Islam, a director of BRTA, the body has been asked to report within March 27, Shafiquzzaman Bhuiyan, deputy director of BRTA, told The Daily Star.
Bhuiyan is the member secretary of the committee. Others are Manzur Morshed, additional deputy commissioner (Traffic-West) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Golam Haider, assistant director of BRTA (head quarter), and Rasheduzzaman, motor vehicle inspector of BRTA.
BRTA yesterday suspended operation of all buses of the two operators -- 167 of Suprobhat Paribahan and 29 of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan-- until further notice.
All documents of the buses and minibuses running under the two companies have also been asked to be produced within three working days to the BRTA authorities.
Two college students--Abdul Karim Rajib, 18, and Dia Khanam Mim, 17, -- were run over and killed by a bus of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan on July 29 last year, while nine others were injured.
The death of the students sparked a wave of protests seeking safer roads.
Meanwhile, Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, a university student, was run over by a bus of ‘Suprabhat Paribahan’ which was reportedly on a mad race near Bashundhara on Tuesday.
The death sparked renewed protests for safer roads.
