BNP vows to ‘bring back democracy’
BNP yesterday vowed to "bring back democracy" in the country and free their party chief Khaleda Zia from jail.
"It is unfortunate that Khaleda, who fought for establishing democracy, has been unjustly kept in jail. When the whole nation is observing Ekushey, party members are compelled to say that there is no democracy," said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, secretary general of BNP.
He made the remarks while talking to reporters after paying homage to language martyrs at Central Shaheed Minar, marking Language Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day.
Fakhrul along with senior party leaders and activists gathered at Azimpur graveyard and offered prayers for language martyrs at 6am and later went to Shaheed Minar at 8am.
The BNP leader said, "The rights of people have been snatched, and there's no rule of law and justice in the country. On this day, we are vowing that we will ensure release of our party chairperson."
According to the country's constitution, she deserves bail, but she is not getting it, Fakhrul added.
Khaleda has been receiving treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University since April 1 last year. She was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case and was sent to jail on February 8, 2018. She was convicted in another corruption case later in 2018. BNP maintains that both cases are politically motivated.
