BCL men smear black paint on 'Zia' plaque
Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) yesterday smeared the word “Zia” with black paint in the name plaque of Zia Memorial Museum in Chattogram's Kazir Dewri area.
Earlier, they formed a human chain in front of the museum, demanding that the authorities replace the name of the museum with “Liberation War Memorial Museum”.
The event was organised under the banner of “Students Forum for Liberation War” around noon.
Rahul Das, its general secretary, said Ziaur Rahman was a “controversial” person; a museum on the Liberation War cannot be named after him.
“Zia rehabilitated the anti-Liberation War forces in the country,” said Rahul, also assistant general secretary of Chattogram city unit of the pro-Awami League student organisation.
Abdur Rahim Shamim, president of the forum and former executive member of BCL central committee, urged the authorities concerned to change the name before Independence Day (March 26).
Condemning the act, Abu Sufian, vice president of BNP's city unit, said, “Zia was a freedom fighter... he proclaimed the independence of Bangladesh...”
“This act proves that they have no respect for freedom fighters,” he said. “They may have smeared Zia's name on the plaque but they cannot remove his name from the hearts of people.”
The deputy commissioner of Chattogram could not be contacted for comment.
