Attack on Journo: 4 more held in Mohammadpur
Rab arrested four youths in the capital’s Mohammadpur on Friday night in connection with an attack on journalist Mostafizur Rahman Sumon during February 1 city elections.
The arrestees are Jahirul Islam Apu (26), Rasel Hawlader (35), Masud (18) and Alauddin (21), said Lt Col Ashique Billah, commanding officer of Rab-2.
The Rab official said they identified the four by scrutinising CCTV footages and other cameras.
Of the four, Rasel is step brother-in-law of Awami League-backed councillor-elect Md Hossain Khokon of ward-34, Rab said.
The victim and witnesses said followers of the councillor launched the attack.
With the four, five suspected attackers were so far arrested. Earlier on Wednesday, police arrested a youth named Ismail Hossain in Rayer Bazar area.
Sumon, a crime reporter at online news portal Agami News, came under the attack while he was taking photos of a gathering of AL activists in the area on the election day.
Followers of an Awami League-backed councillor candidate swooped on the journalist wielding sharp weapons and snatched his phone, said his colleagues and witnesses.
Sumon was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he had to get six stitches on his head, said Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost.
