Asking for trees to plant
With an aim to raise awareness on environment preservation and forestation, a group of youths launched a tree plantation campaign in Sylhet city yesterday.
“Bhoomishontan Bangladesh”, a voluntary environmental organisation, started the “Brikkho Bhikkha” campaign on the occasion of Sylhet Divisional Tree Fair at Alia Madrasa field in Chowhatta area.
Ashraful Kabir, coordinator of the organisation, said everyone should plant trees, and they are trying to raise awareness among people in this regard.
Regarding the name Brikkho Bhikkha, he said, “Many want to plant trees but don’t know where or how. We’ll plant those for them in different areas of the city. We are asking people to donate trees instead of money.”
“For example, a new government high school was inaugurated in the city’s Lakkatura recently. It’s situated in a large area, but there are not many trees. We have taken permission from the authorities concerned to plant trees surrounding the school,” he added.
Kabir said the tree fair will end in a couple of days, but they will continue their campaign.
SM Sazzad Hossain, deputy conservator of forests and divisional forest officer in Sylhet, said this initiative taken by the organisation is commendable. “It will help raise awareness about planting more trees.”
Bhoomishontan was formed in 2014.
