Armed Forces Day observed
The Armed Forces Day was observed on Wednesday, marking the founding of army, navy and air force during the 1971 Liberation War.
The day began with offering special prayers at mosques in cantonments, naval and air force bases, seeking blessings for well-being and prosperity of the nation and progress of the armed forces, reports BSS.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion.
The president paid tributes to members of the armed forces, who made supreme sacrifices during the Liberation War, by placing a wreath at Shikha Anirban (flame eternal) in Dhaka Cantonment at 8:00am.
Earlier, the president was received by the chiefs of three services and principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division.
The premier, also in-charge of the Ministry of Defence, paid her tributes by placing a wreath at Shikha Anirban in the morning. She stood there in solemn silence for sometime as a mark of profound respect. A smartly turned out contingent presented a guard of honour, while bugle played the last post.
On her arrival, Hasina was received by Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nizamuddin Ahmad, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat and PSO of the Armed Forces Division Lt Gen Md Mahfuzur Rahman.
Programmes were also held at army garrisons, naval ships, installations and the air force bases.
The day was also observed in Bangladesh missions and embassies with due solemnity, reports our diplomatic correspondent.
In New Delhi, the mission's defence wing hosted a reception with Lt Gen Amarjeet Singh Bedi, director general of defence intelligence agency and deputy chief of integrated defence staff of India, as chief guest.
Defence Adviser of Bangladesh High Commission Brig Gen AKM Ziaur Rahman and High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali were also present.
In Yangon, Myanmar, the Bangladesh embassy held a function where Lt Gen Myo Zaw Thein of Myanmar army attended as chief guest. Bangladesh Ambassador in Yangon Manjurul Karim Chowdhury was present, among others.
A special event was also held at the embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
