AL will abide by polls code: Quader
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said Awami League leaders and activists will abide by the code of conduct of the Election Commission (EC) in the Dhaka city corporation polls.
“We have given directives to our leaders and activists in this regard. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked ministers not to violate electoral codes by any means,” he told a discussion after inaugurating a portrait of Bangabandhu at Roads and Highways Department.
Quader also said he is abiding by the code as a minister and lawmaker.
About BNP’s allegation over level playing field, Quader said, “What is a level playing field? Does it mean BNP secretary general can hold a public meeting but AL general secretary cannot? BNP leaders Moudud Ahmed and Khandker Mosharraf can take part in campaign but AL leaders Amir Hossain Amu and Tofail Ahmed cannot, because they are MPs?” he said.
‘BNP PATRONISES COMMUNALISM’
In another event yesterday, Quader said communalism is the main impediment to building a “Sonar Bangla”, as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
“BNP is a patron of communalism. But we want to root it out from society and build a Sonar Bangla under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he told reporters after placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Dhanmondi-32, marking his Homecoming Day.
Quader said eliminating communalism from the country is a challenge for the ruling Awami League.
“Homecoming Day of Bangabandhu is significant for the Bangalee nation. On this day, our pledge is to build Awami League as a more organised and stronger party,” he said.
On January 10, 1972, Bangabandhu returned to independent Bangladesh after over nine and a half months of captivity in a Pakistan jail.
