Accurate voter list must for fair polls
In absence of free and fair elections, democracy loses its purpose, said Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar yesterday.
“Those who do not believe in democracy want to make the elections controversial,” he said. The EC was speaking at a training programme ahead of updating the voter list at Electoral Training Institute in Agargaon.
He said it is not possible to hold a free and fair election by destroying the “sanctity of vote”. Through casting ballots, people get an opportunity to select their representatives. People's aspirations are reflected through the process. Accurate voter list is a precondition for free and fair election. Presence of fake voters can turn the election into a farce. He asked officials to work with honesty and dedication while updating the voter list.
Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed was also present at the programme. EC representatives will go door-to-door from April 23 to May 13 to update the voter list. The draft of updated voter list will be published on January 2 next year to receive and dispose of complaints, if any, EC Mahbub said.
The commission will publish the final updated voter list on January 31.
