ACC Intervention: 2,478 tea workers get allocation dues
A total of 2,478 tea-plantation workers in Rajnagar of Moulvibazar district got their annual government allocation that was held back for eight months, with the intervention of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), according to an official press release yesterday.
Local administration could not disburse the government’s periodic block allocation -- amounting to Tk 1.24 crore -- among the workers ‘due to local politics,’ it said.
Following a complaint, ACC director general Mohammad Munir Chowdhury instructed local ACC officials to sort out the issue along with local upazila administration at the earliest, on humanitarian grounds.
The ACC enforcement team, led by its assistant director Md Ershad Mia on January 21 went to Rajnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer, who within three days collected the workers’ details from local public representatives and started disbursement.
Munir Chowdhury, also the chief coordinator of ACC’s ongoing enforcement drives, said blocking workers’ payment is an abuse of power and violation of human rights.
