26 Jamaat activists arrested from Cox's Bazar, Barishal, Ctg
Around 26 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami were arrested on charges of plotting subversive activities, vandalism and anarchy in Cox's Bazar, Barishal and Chattogram yesterday, according to reports from our correspondents.
In Cox's Bazar, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested some 17 leaders and activists of Jamaat from a hotel in the town.
Rab said they were holding a clandestine meeting to plot subversive activities.
The arrests were made acting on a tip-off, said Maj Mehedi Hasan, a company commander of the elite force.
In Barishal, police arrested six leaders of the party at “Mahila Model Madrasa” on Nabogram road in the city, for allegedly committing the same offence.
Some jihadi books were also seized from their possession, said police.
Nurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, told The Daily Star that the arrestees were gathering at the place from different districts -- including Satkhira, Bhola, Patuakhali, Jhalakathi and Barishal.
The arrestees include Fazlul Karim, 63, ameer of Bhola district unit of the party; Abdul Hye, 55, Patuakhlai municipality ameer; and Kamrul Islam Khan, 46, former ameer of Gournadi upazila.
They were planning to create an obstacle to the next general election, said the OC.
Meanwhile in Chattogram, police arrested three Jamaat leaders from different places in the city's Bakalia area yesterday.
The three are -- Ahsan Ullah, nayeb-e-ameer of the city unit of Jamaat; Shahab Uddin, central rukan of the party, and Asadullah, vice-president of East Bakalia ward unit, said police.
They are accused of several cases filed with Bakalia Police Station in connection with vandalism and anarchy, said Officer-in-Charge of the station Pranab Chowdhury.
