A Chattogram court yesterday sentenced nine persons to death and four to life term imprisonment for killing a man in Cumilla six years ago.
The death row convicts are Sajib, Rajib, their father Harun Mia, Shaon, Amin, Rabu, Momin, Mohsin and Abu Taher, while the life-terms convicts are Matin, Shah Paran, Shamim and Khokon, said court sources.
Acting Judge Md Abdul Halim of Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal delivered the verdict, said public prosecutor Ayub Khan.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 1 lakh each, in default of which they will have to suffer two more years in jail, said the PP.
The court acquitted three persons -- Nayan Mia, Moslem Mia, and Billal Mia -- as their involvement in the crime could not be proved, said Advocate Ayub
According to the prosecution, one Jahangir Alam was hacked by criminals following a dispute over a fish enclosure at Gouripur’s Dakhsin Para in Cumilla on December 1, 2013. He succumbed to his injuries at Gouripur Upazila Health Complex later in the day.
The victim’s father filed a case with Daudkandi Police Station the next day.
The case was transferred to Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal on November 11, 2015. The court framed charges against the accused on December 12, 2015.
