8 killed in road and train accidents
In a tragic day for commuters, eight people were killed in separate road and train accidents across the country in the last two days, report our correspondents.
In Sylhet city, a woman was killed in a road accident in Majortila area yesterday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Kulsuma Begum (40) of Bateshwar in Sylhet’s Sadar upazila, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
The accident occurred around 3:30pm after the Bateshwar-bound human haulier carrying her plunged into a roadside ditch after a bus of Nagar Express hit it from behind, said Md Abdul Quaiyum, officer-in-charge of Shahporan Police Station. The collision killed her on the spot.
This also injured five other passengers of the human haulier, but their identities could not be confirmed.
“Police recovered the body and sent it to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The injured are undergoing treatment at the same hospital,” Quaiyum added.
Following the accident, locals blocked the road for half an hour but withdrew it on request of the police, the OC said.
In Keraniganj, three people were killed in a three-way collision between a motorcycle, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, and a microbus in Kanarchar area yesterday evening, reports our Savar correspondent. Identity of the deceased could not be confirmed until filing of this report.
The accident took place on the Kolatia-Keraniganj road around 5pm and left five people critically injured.
The injured were taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar where on-duty doctors declared the three dead, Mostofa Kamal, said OC of Keraniganj Model Police Station.
The other two were admitted to ICU in critical condition, said Nasir Uddin, operation theater in-charge of the hospital.
In separate accidents in Faridpur, two people, including a school student, were killed in the last two days, reports our Faridpur correspondent.
In Saltha upazila, school student Mamun (11) was killed after a three-wheeler ran him over at Baliya road around 5:30pm on Monday. Later, locals caught the driver and handed him over to police.
In another accident, biker Zahangir Sheikh (42) was killed after a truck hit his bike on the Dhaka-Barishal Highway yesterday. Police have seized the truck but the driver managed to flee the scene, said Sapur Ahamad, sub-inspector of Karimpur Highway Police Outpost.
Meanwhile in Rajshahi, Babu (35) was killed after the three-wheeler carrying him lost control and turned over near Khoyranondo bil area in Mohanpur upazila on Monday night, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.
Following the accident, locals rushed him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries yesterday.
In a rail accident at Joypurhat, a man was killed after a three-wheeler was hit by a train in Akkelpur upazila yesterday. The deceased was identified as Moksedur Rahman (35), reports our Dinajpur correspondent.
The accident occurred as the vehicle carrying Moksedur was attempting to cross an unmanned level crossing at Jamalganj village around 10am. He was killed on the spot after the Titumeer Express train hit Moksedur’s three-wheeler, upazila police said.
