Seven-year-old among three killed as vehicle catches fire
Three people, including a child, were killed and five injured after a microbus overturned and caught on fire at Gobindopur area in Cumilla’s Chandina upazila around 5:30am on Sunday.
The deceased are Robja, 7, daughter of Mokbul Hossain; Yosuf, 67; and Babul, 48.
The accident occurred when a bus hit the microbus, making it collide with a truck in front. The microbus then overturned and its cylinder burst, engulfing it in flames, said Sub-inspector Jashim Uddin of Mainamoti Highway Police Station.
The injured are Robja’s mother Halima Begum, 40; Abul Kashem, 50; Jashim Uddin, 48; Sajib, 20; and Mojnu Mia, 50.
Shafik Uddin Munshi, station officer of Chandina Fire Station, said, “We rescued three passengers from the microbus and took them to the upazila health complex and Cumilla Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Locals also rescued two people earlier.”
Dr Delowar Hossain, medical officer of Chandina Upazila Health Complex, said, “We provided primary treatment to the injured. Halima sustained 50 percent burn injuries, Abul 35 and Jashim 25.”
All injured were later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment.
Shah-Alam, an eyewitness, said microbuses have been carrying passengers since three-wheelers were withdrawn from the highway.
Most microbuses have no fitness, but these vehicles are being used as alternative transport for short distances, he claimed.
Drivers of the vehicles involved in the accident fled.
Meanwhile, at least six people were killed and 28 injured in other accidents across the country in the last two days, our correspondents and news agencies report.
In Khulna, police constable Md Nazrul Islam, 40, was killed after a collision between a human haulier and motorbike in front of Debipur Women College of Rupsha upazila yesterday, said police.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Khulna Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
In the capital, construction worker Shanju Mia, 55, was killed on the spot after a truck hit him while he was crossing the road in Bashpotti area around 10am yesterday.

In Chattogram, Kamrul Islam, 24, a Laguna driver, was killed on the spot after an unidentified vehicle hit his parked Laguna while he was changing the tyres at Naoduara area in Mirsarai upazila around 9:30am yesterday, said police, quoting locals.
On information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and handed it over to his family.
In Dinajpur, Abdul Maleque, 35, was injured after a bus hit him on TNT road in Ghoraghat upazila on Sunday, said police, quoting locals.
Locals took him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries yesterday.
In a separate accident in the district, Subash Chandra Roy, 36, was killed on the spot after a pickup van hit the easy-bike carrying him at Hajratpur village in Chirirbandar upazila on the same day, they added.
Drivers of the bus and van fled the scene.
In Rangpur, an unidentified man was killed and 28 were injured after two buses collided at Damdama area in Sadar upazila on Sunday, said police.
Police seized both the vehicles.
