65-day fishing ban in Sundarbans begins today
The Forest Department has imposed a 65-day ban on fishing in all canals in the Sundarbans from July 1 to August 31 to ensure safe breeding and preservation of fish and other aquatic animals.
This ban has been imposed immediately after the end of a 65-day ban on fishing in the Bay of Bengal that continued till June 30.
Fishing will remain prohibited in nearly 400 canals. Canals with more than 25 feet width will remain out the ban’s purview.
Sundarban’s Chandpai Range Officer Shahin Kabir said all fishermen had been informed about the ban. Limited passes will be provided for fishing in big rivers.
Sundarbans Management Committee, Community Patrol Group, Village Tiger Response Teams and Wild Team will work with the department to implement the ban.
Meanwhile expressing frustration, local fishermen said the authorities concerned imposed the ban without arranging any alternative livelihood for them.
