50 honoured for reporting on child rights
A total of 50 media professionals were honoured at Meena Media Award yesterday for reporting on child rights.
The programme was organised by UNICEF Bangladesh at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital.
The winners were selected from 85 nominees in 14 categories, with the total number of entries rising to 850 this year. They received award money, crests and certificates.
Along with the mainstream media, participants from outside Dhaka also reported to bring attention to issues affecting children across the country.
The Meena Media Award has been designed to celebrate excellence in creative media and journalism in print, electronic and online platforms.
Winners in the under-18 group include Meem Noshin Nawal Khan from Janakantha, Fahim Ahammed Riyad from hello.bdnews24.com, Syeda Abrar Toaha Draha from Children's Film Festival Bangladesh and Ishmam Tahsin Ahmed from Radio Palli Kantha.
Winners in the over-18 group include Ashique Mustafa from Shishu Grantha Kutir, Kazi Nafia Rahman from bdnews24.com, Maliha Bashir from ATN Bangla, Sony Ramany from New Age and Musfiqur Salahin from Radio Bikrampur.
The media professionals reported on child marriage, religious bigotry, child healthcare, issues involving adolescence and so on.
The Meena App featuring comics, videos and games was launched at the event. An added attraction at the award ceremony was a live performance by popular band Warfaze.
The event also highlighted World Children's Day, a global day of action to raise awareness and funds for millions of children who are unschooled and unprotected.
Unicef representative in Bangladesh, Edouard Beigbeder, said, “I hope the vibrant media of Bangladesh will also join this global action for children, through advancing their causes and their participation in the media.”
Noted author Selina Hossain said the reports have generated awareness and enlightened the people of the country. The creative endeavour of the reporters will collectively help in empowering children.
UNICEF Bangladesh Goodwill Ambassadors Arifa Zaman Moushumi and Jewel Aich were present at the event.
