5 ‘muggers’ held for killing driver
Police yesterday arrested five persons on charge of killing a private car driver during an alleged mugging incident in port city's Chowmuhuny area on Saturday night.
Police also seized a pick-up van from their possession.
The arrestees are Md Rabbi (22), Md Al Amin (22), Md Sohel (25), Md Babu (20) and Md Kamal Hossain (20).
Additional Deputy Commissioner (west) AAM Huyamun Kabir said the arrestees were active members of a mugging gang and they used to snatch valuables from people at night riding on that van.
Inspector (Investigation) Jahir Hossain told The Daily Star, "A private car driver, Ayub Ali (50), hailing from Faridpur, was stabbed by muggers in Chowmuhony area around midnight."
He said around six muggers intercepted Ayub's rickshaw in front of a car showroom and tried to take his bag. As he tried to resist, they stabbed and looted his valuables.
Locals rescued and took him to Agrabad Maa O Shishu Hospital, where he passed away. His sister filed a case accusing unknown persons with Double Mooring Police Station, he added.
Ayub was going to his friend's house at Barik Building from his sister's house at Lalkhan Bazar.
ADC Humayun said four out of the five arrestees are accused in several mugging cases.
