5 killed, 38 injured in a day
At least five people were killed and 38 injured in road accidents across the country yesterday, our correspondents report.
In Thakurgaon, Sefali Begum, 35, was killed and 16 were injured when a bus hit an electric pole and fell into a roadside ditch in Sadar upazila.
Shariful Islam, one of the passengers, said after passing Bangabandhu Bridge, the bus driver started driving recklessly and ignored repeated requests to drive properly.
When the bus reached near Thakurgaon BGB headquarters around 4am, its driver lost control of the vehicle and fell into the ditch after hitting a pole. Sefali died on the spot.
On information from locals, firefighters went to the spot, rescued the injured and took them to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital where they are being treated.
Police seized the bus but its driver fled the scene.
In Lalmonirhat, Mamun Islam, 35, a truck driver, was killed and at least 20 were injured when a bus and his truck collided in Barakhata area of Hatibandha upazila, said police, quoting witnesses.
Both the vehicles were speeding and police seized them. They took the injured to different hospitals, police added.
In Bagerhat, Maria Akhtar, 8, was killed and her parents were severely injured as a bus and rickshaw-van collided on Khulna-Bagerhat highway in Fakirhat upazila, said police.
After the accident, the van driver Karim Sheikh, 40, his wife Aisha Begum, 35, and their daughter Maria were seriously injured.
Locals sent the injured to Khulna Medical College Hospital, but Maria died on the way there.
The bus drive fled with the vehicle after the accident.
In Mymensingh, Fazlu Mia, 50, and Alal Uddin, 70, were killed when a truck skidded off the road and ran them over in Signboard area of Trishal upazila around 6am, said police, quoting locals.
Both died on the spot. Police recovered the bodies and handed them over to their families, they added.
Police seized the truck but its driver and helper fled the scene. A case was lodged in this connection.
