5 illegal brick kilns fined Tk 16 lakh
A mobile court of the Department of Environment (DoE) in a drive yesterday tore down five illegal brick kilns in Bandar upazila and collected Tk 16 lakh in fines from owners of the establishments.
The court also handed down two months’ imprisonment to each of the owners, who were later released upon payment of the fines.
Assisted by Rapid Action Battalion 11, DoE Executive Magistrate Kazi Tamzid Ahmed led the mobile court that conducted the drive in Dasergaon area of the upazila till the evening.
Nayan Mia, acting deputy director of DoE in Narayanganj, told The Daily Star that none of the five brick kilns had any licence to operate the kilns, nor did they have any environmental clearance certificate from the DoE.
Masha Allah Bricks was fined Tk 3 lakhs, Ekota Brickfield and Bondhu Brickfield Tk 5 lakhs each, Bismillah Brickfield Tk 2 lakhs and Chacha Bhatija Brickfield was fined Tk 1 lakh, he added.
