5 ‘Ansar-Al-Islam’ members held in Dhaka

Members of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested five alleged members of the banned militant group Ansar-Al-Islam from Sabujbag area of Dhaka.

The arrestees are Nijam Uddin (21), Rayhan Bhuiyan (20), Hanif Uddin Suman (19), Sheikh Iftekharur Islam alias Arif (25) and Mufti Muslim (27), said Ilias Sharif, joint commissioner of CTTC, during a briefing at DMP Media Centre this afternoon.

The arrestees were planning to attack religious establishments in Dhaka, the official claimed.

Acting on a tip off, a team of CTTC conducted a drive yesterday afternoon at Sabujbag’s Balur Math area and arrested the men.

They also recovered three machetes and four smartphones from the arrestees’ possession.

During primary interrogation, the arrestees admitted that they came from different parts of the country to Dhaka in order to receive training to carry out subversive activities.

They were planning to attack religious establishments in Dhaka, said the official, quoting the arrestees.
