47th National Cooperatives Day today
The 47th National Cooperatives Day will be observed in the country today under the auspices of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.
The theme of the year is “Let's build cooperative-based society, ensure sustainable development”.
The department of cooperatives has chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner. Various programmes such as rallies, discussions, distribution of the national cooperatives award and cultural events will be held across the country.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday issued separate messages on the occasion.
The president, in his message, said the cooperatives are playing important roles in women's empowerment including rural poverty alleviation, employment generation, marketing commodities and ensuring fair price of goods.
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had recognised cooperatives as one of the best instruments for development, he said.
The president urged all to be more active and sincere in making the cooperatives' activities more vibrant, active and time-befitting in order to turn Bangladesh into a prosperous nation.
Highlighting different aspects of cooperatives, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the cooperatives are playing important roles in the country's socio-economic development.
At present, the country has 1,74,700 cooperatives with 1,09,00,000 members, she said.
People irrespective of different professions are reaping the benefits from agriculture, fisheries, livestock, savings, credit distribution, dairy and cottage industries, garments, housing, banks, insurances, commodity marketing, and under projects like Asrayan and Ekti Bari Ekti Khamar under the cooperatives society, the prime minister added.
