42 tonnes of polythene seized

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Thursday seized 42 tonnes of banned polythene bags worth Tk 1 crore in Rangpur city and arrested a man in this connection.

The arrestee, Obaidul Islam, was held in Shalbon Mistripara area. He was produced before a mobile court that sentenced him to three months' jail and fined him Tk 50,000, said a press release yesterday.

Tipped off, a team of Rab-13 conducted the raid at three warehouses owned by Obaidul and seized a huge quantity of banned polythene bags kept in several sacks.

Similar drives are on in different areas of Rangpur to stop the illegal trade, the release added.
