4 killed, 3 hurt in road crashes
At least five people were killed and three injured in road accidents across the country yesterday, according to reports from our correspondents and news agencies.
In Chattogram, Shariful Islam, 30, was killed and three were injured when two trucks collided at Mithachhara bazar in Mirsharai upazila around 6:15am, said fire service officials.
After the collision, both vehicles plunged into a ditch beside the road.
Firefighters rushed to the spot, rescued the injured, and sent Shariful’s body to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
The injured -- Md Habib, Md Raihan and Amit Das -- were admitted to the upazila health complex, they added.
In Mymensingh, Sajjad Sufol, 24, a student of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, died as he fell off his motorbike after hitting a speed breaker in Naudhar area in Trishal upazila around 2pm.
Quoting locals, police said Sufol sustained critical injuries to his head and was taken to a nearby health complex.
He was then referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
In Khulna, four-year-old Rehsan was killed when a speeding battery-run auto-rickshaw hit him in Agarghata area of Paikgachha upazila.
Police, quoting locals and family members, said the accident occurred when Rehsan and his father were crossing the road.
The auto-rickshaw driver fled after hitting the boy.
Locals rushed Rehsan to a nearby health complex where doctors declared him dead.
Police are yet to catch the driver.
In Cumilla, Majeda Begum, 85, was killed when a truck crushed a battery-run auto-rickshaw in the city’s Nurpur Chowmuhoni area around 10:30am.
Police said the accident occurred when the woman was returning home by the auto-rickshaw. The truck could not be identified yet. Her body was handed over to her family.
In Nilphamari, Faruk Hossain, 25, was killed when a speeding truck ran him over at Niamatpur village of Saidpur.
Police and witnesses said Faruk was on top of a sand-laden trolley attached to a power-tiller. At one point, a speeding truck hit the power-tiller from behind.
He then fell on the road and the truck ran him over.
Locals rushed critically injured Faruk to a nearby hospital where doctors referred him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
He succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital around 11am.
