39 political leaders honoured
US-based Democracy International (DI) yesterday awarded 39 leaders of different political parties, including Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party, for promoting peaceful coexistence in the upcoming national polls.
Titled “Champion of Peace”, the awards are part of DI's “Shantite Bijoy” (win with peace) campaign, funded by USAID and UKaid, said a press release. A ceremony was held at a hotel in Dhaka on the occasion.
Under the campaign, the awardees participated in various events such as peace rallies, dialogues and workshops between candidates and voters and encouraged party leaders and activists to participate in constructive multiparty events across the country.
At the ceremony, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Political Adviser HT Imam said, “This award will inspire political leaders to foster the spirit of peaceful election.”
BNP Standing Committee Member Abdul Moyeen Khan said, “The political parties should engage in constructive debates to resolve their issues.”
Jatiya Party Presidium Member Ziauddin Bablu said, “We are learning the democracy building process. There is some good progress and hopefully we will continue to improve all aspects of our democracy.”
