3 remanded for distributing money to influence polls
A Dhaka court yesterday placed three persons on a five-day remand each in connection with a case filed by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) over distributing money to influence the upcoming election and instigate violence.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Masud Ur Rahman passed the order after Sub-inspector Md Faruque Hossain of Motijheel Police Station produced Joynal Abedin, Alamgir Hossain and Ali Haider with a 10-day remand prayer.
Ali is the managing director of United Enterprise and Corporation, while Joynal and Alamgir are employees of Amena Enterprise and Services Trust Ltd, a company owned by Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu, a Jatiya Oikyafront candidate from Shariatpur-3 constituency. Rab filed the case with Motijheel Police Station last night accusing six persons, including Mia Nuruddin, after the trio was arrested by the elite force.
Speaking at a press conference in front of United Corporation in Motijheel, Rab Director General Benazir Ahmed said they seized Tk 8 crore and several cheques worth around Tk 10 crore from their possession.
He claimed the three have so far distributed about Tk 150 crore in various constituencies to instigate violence and influence the December 30 parliamentary polls.
In the remand prayer, the SI claimed the trio was conspiring against the state by distributing money among criminals in a bid to instigate violence.
The defence opposed the remand prayer and submitted a petition seeking bail for the three along with a cancellation of the remand prayer.
Rab sources said acting on intelligence information, the elite force raided United Corporation yesterday and arrested Ali Haider.
Gleaning information from Haider, the Rab raided Amena Enterprise and detained the two others.
