A Chattogram court yesterday awarded death penalty to three and sentenced another to life-term jail for killing a schoolboy at Mirsarai upazila.
The death row convicts are Md Kazi Sarwar Uddin, Mir Hossain and Shahidul Islam. The life term convict is Md Hossne Mobarak Hossain.
The court of Chattogram District and Session Judge (acting) Munsi Abdul Majid handed down the verdict, said Public Prosecutor Advocate AKM Sirajul Islam.
The court also sentenced Sarwar to 10 years in jail while Mir Hossain and Shahidul were fined Tk 50,000 each.
After the verdict, the court sent the convicts to jail. Kazi Sarwar has been on the run after securing bail, said the PP.
According to the case statement, the victim, Farhan Sakib (15) was a student of class 10 of Jorarganj JB School under Mirsarai upazila. On June 6, 2015, Sakib went home at Uttar Mobarakghona area from school and left home after Sarwar called him on the phone.
While he stood on the roadside, a microbus forcibly picked him up, said the case statement. Failing to trace him, the victim’s elder brother Shahidul Islam Rubel filed a missing person case with Jorarganj Police Station on the same day. Later, police recovered Sakib’s body from a hilly area under Baraiyarhat municipality area. His throat was slit.
The victim’s brother filed a case with Jorarganj Police Station. Police pressed charges against five persons in the case on November 2015, while a court of Chattogram framed charges against them later.
Victim’s brother Shahidul Islam Rubel said, “Sarwar and Mobarak are our neighbours and they had a longstanding dispute with my grandfather over land.”
“We, however, had no dispute before the murder of Sakib,” he said.
