2nd phase of Biswa Ijtema begins today
Thousands of Muslim devotees have started gathering on the bank of river Turag in Tongi to attend the second phase of Biswa Ijtema set to begin today.
Followers of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi will the join the second phase of Biswa Ijtema, the largest Islamic congregation after Hajj.
Organisers hope that over one lakh devotees will join the second phase which will end on January 19 with Akheri Monajat (concluding prayers). The first phase was held from January 10-12.
Local administration and Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) in association with devotees have taken all-out preparation to make the congregation successful.
Numerous tinned-roof houses were set up at Ijtema premises, while several small bridges and culverts were also constructed for swift commuting in the area. Sanitation and cleaning measures have also been taken.
Law enforcers have taken five-layer security measures to avert any unwanted situation. Around 8,000 members of law enforcement agencies will be deployed in and around Ijtema premises. CCTV, watch tower and metal detectors have been installed surrounding the ground, said Anwar Hossain, commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police.
Talking to journalists, GCC mayor Jahangir Alam said 800 drums of bleaching powder have been provided and 400 cleaners have been deployed to keep the premises clean. Around 3 crore gallons of water will be provided for the devotees daily.
The district’s deputy commissioner SM Tariqul Islam said the government would provide uninterrupted electricity and water supply to the area during the congregation.
