2005 series bombing convict held from Patuakhali after 15yrs
A team of Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of police yesterday arrested a life-term convict of the 2005 series bomb-blast case from Patuakhali.
Arrested Md Belal Mia (36) is a member of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), the group responsible for the bombings. Belal was accused in the First Information Report (FIR) of the case.
He went into hiding hours after the case was filed, MM Hasanul Zahid, SP of ATU, told The Daily Star.
For the next fifteen years, he took up different identities and made several fake National Identity Cards (NID) to evade arrest, added SP Zahid. He lived in Dhaka, Savar, and Naryanganj, and worked a variety of jobs.
For the last two years, he worked as a mason around Mohipur Bazar area of Patuakhali carrying a fake NID card under the name Rubel, the SP said.
Based on information, an ATU team conducted a joint drive with district police in the area around 2am and made the arrest, SP Mainul Hasan of Patuakhali district police told a press briefing.
Banned JMB on August 17, 2005 simultaneously blasted bombs in 63 districts of the country. Belal was awarded life-term in the case by Khagrachari District Court.
